Letters opposing the proposed early release of Susan Atkins

Below are some of the emails we've recieved in opposition of early release of Susan Atkins.

"Look bitch, I don't care about you. I don't care if you're going to have a baby or not. You're going to die and I don't feel anything about it." - Susan Atkins to Sharon Tate, August 9th, 1969.

"I have no guilt in me." - Susan Atkins at her 1971 trial, when asked if she felt sorrow for murdering the people at the Tate-Polanski home.

"I would like anonymity. I would like to not be known as the Susan Atkins that the media and my tragic past created." - Susan Atkins in 1985 blaming her past and the media for creating the Susan Atkins the public knows.

"They didn't even look like people...I didn't relate to Sharon Tate as being anything but a store mannequin." - Susan Atkins at her 1971 trial, speaking about the victims at the Tate-Polanski home.

"You're an excellent actress. The greatest job since Sarah Bernhardt." - Doris Tate to Susan Atkins

"I killed her, I stabbed her and she fell. And I stabbed her again. I don't know how many times I stabbed her and I don't know why I stabbed her," - Susan Atkins describing the murder of Sharon Tate, during her 1971 trial.

"It is most unfortunate that Ms. Atkins now suffers a terminal illness. However, in the eyes of the law and in memory of her victims, I fail to see how one thing correlates to the other." -Margaret DiMaria, sister of Jay Sebring.

"She’s a facial chameleon whose features can shift almost imperceptibly from coldness to glowing innocence." - Stephen Kay speaking about Susan Atkins

Since the proposed release of Susan Atkins was announced June 12th, we have received hundreds of email letters in opposition of "compassionate release" for Ms. Atkins. As of the date of this writing (June 14th, 2008. 5pm ET) we have not received one email in favor of her release.

Below are some of the emails we've received. Email addresses, names and addresses have been removed to protect the privacy of the emailers.

Please know that there are people who still remember the shocking news from '69 and the horror that was revealed during the trials.  People like me who know that Ms. Debra Tate is not a 'heartless creature' but a heartbroken sister.

Stay strong.  The work you and your family has done and continues to do is as important as it is inspiring.  Take comfort in the knowledge that your struggle is for justice.  With justice comes peace.  With peace comes compassion.  With compassion comes freedom.

Dear Tate Family,

I just heard on the news that Susan Adkins may be released because she is terminally ill and that California passed legislation that terminally ill prisoners may be released so that they can go home and die with loved ones around them.

I remember the Manson Murders vividly.  I was 18 years old and 7 months pregnant at the time and it stayed with me throughout the years.

I have followed the parole hearings, when they were broadcast on Court TV, and kept up to date (as much as possible) on each attempt at parole.

While I am sorry that Ms. Adkins is terminally ill, it angered me that she should be possibly afforded the privilege of going home to pass among her loved ones.  Her victims were certainly not given that choice.

I am writing because I do not know who else to write to and let them know my outrage and disgust at this latest news.

If you could please send me contact information I would certainly express my disgust to the appropriate authorities.

Sharon and your family are in my thoughts frequently.

Hello! I am interested in knowing who I can contact to oppose the "compassionate release" of Susan Atkins. I just read about it on CNN.

I am outraged by a CNN article that states Susan Atkins has been granted a "compassionate release" from the prison she is in and that the CA Board of Parole Hearings and the sentencing court must also approve this release.  I have emailed the governor and the office of victims rights on the CDCR website imploring them to stop this action. I don't care that this woman is terminally ill.  She did not grant any of her victims "compassion" when she murdered them. We must stop this from ever happening. Can you direct me in the right direction to voice my concern on this matter?

I was absolutely incensed at todays news about the possible release of Susan Atkins.  Is there any petition going that I can sign against it? What can I do to help? Thank you for this site, it's a wonderful tribute to a beautiful and innocent person.

Will there be a posted petition we can sign, to be presented to the California Parole Board, showing our disagreement to give a compassionate release to Atkins?

Although I was just 10 yrs old at the time of your sister's murder, and the others, I do remember it. Such a beautiful young woman, and talent taken from us too soon. I am a supporter of keeping those monsters in prison until they have paid with their own lives the travesty they committed .

I will write to the parole board regarding Susan Atkins "compassionate release". My opinion is, it took prison for her to find God. Had she found God earlier in her life, she would not be where she is today.

Keep up the good work you are doing, you have my support!

I am shocked to hear her asking for compassionate release-
WHERE was her Compassion for Sharon and her Baby?
I was Born July 1957.
I remember all of the events  of That sad day that Sharon
and her Baby were Murdered in cold Blood.
As a citizen , a taxpayer ,  a voter- a human being,No way do
I want to see her or any member of that family out of Prison-
Especially not her. What she said to Sharon-I'd say back to her.She could have saved that unborn child, and chose not to.
Are we to have compassion for someone who did what she did? No.
She was sentenced to Die, and California instead of carrying out her sentence-
and the Sentence  of all of the other Family members, instead decided to sentence taxpayers to taking Care of all of them from that Day to this in Prison.
Their Clothing, their meals , their  lives- the bars around them all paid for by the very people who wanted them to Die , and rightly so, for what they did.We were all denied
Justice - us and the victims. This was not justice.
She needs to die a long slow death behind prison walls.
If there is to     be no justice for  the adult Victims,I would emplore  the courts to consider the Baby she denied life to.
These Victims have been in my opinion , denied justice far too long . sending these animals to live out their lives in prison, to be able to feel  the warmth of the sun, to breathe air,to enjoy the most minimal of creature comforts while the victims were denied  the right to live- this was and is the worst and most shameful injustice ever comitted in  this country.these victims were chased down.I hope   the prison system realises  what  they  have done and finally takes at least one small step to rectify the situation.
She has  no right to get out of prison-no one has forgotten what she said to poor Sharon.
taking the life of a baby so close  to   being born. If they put it to a vote, I'm sure the PEOPLE who wanted them all DEAD-they Jury who convicted  them- ask us- The verdict , I'm sure , even after all of these Years , has not changed.
I am a staunch admirer of Sharon's MOM who fought so hard to make sure they stayed where they belong-and of you , for carrying on in her Name.
If I  can do anything to help keep her where she does belong, please  do not hesitate to let me know.

I am so sorry for imposing.  I just read the news on cnn.com.  I just want you to know that I stand behind you 100%.  My sister was, too, murdered by a serial murderer.  That woman has not even begun to serve penance for her crime.  I still cry for my sister every day. I am raising her 2 boys.  Never feel bad for that woman’s sentence.  She deserves 100 percent of the sentence given and another 100 year on top of that.  Nothing could replace your beautiful sister or the years you have missed with her and her child.  I don’t care what she has become or her illness. She is sick.. sick.. sick!  God bless your family.  Screw them!  Please don’t feel an ounce of guilt.  I hope she stays there until she rots in Hell!

Hello Debra,

I was only a month old when your sister was murder but I have followed the story for many years your nephew would have been my age if Susan Atkins would have had listen to Sharon cries I was reading a story about them wanting to release Susan Atkins. I would like to know if there is any thing that the public can do to stop this from taking place. You said it the best did Ms. Atkins listen to your sister no so why should the prison let her be release because she is now dying?

Hello, I was in LA when your sister was killed, and I am still stunned by the fact that Tex Watson lives, and has never really been punished for his brutality. I am in Virginia, but if I can be of service in any way to oppose the parole of these individuals who committed with most heinous crimes it would be my pleasure. I am sickened by this Watson's web site where he is all "pure", meanwhile, how many people are capable of acting out his monstrous acts? Nevermind about drugs. You still have to be capable of it. I am a business woman, and because of the internet I am now reaching out to you. I am sickened by this Watson hiding behind his religiosity. I think someone needs to speak for your sister .

Debra,

I'm with ya. I never believed, of all involved, that this girl would ever be released. I wrote an email to the Govornor of California for all the good that will do. I only wish I wasn't 3000 miles away so I could march in front of his office with a big sign.

I am 45 years old and though I was a small child when this tragedy happen, it haunts me to this day.  It has less to do with the beauty of someone (although she was a gorgeous person, inside and out) more to do with the fact that so many young lives were never given the opportunity to reach their potential.  I can’t even begin to imagine how a family recovers from such a tragedy, and I admire the work you do on behalf of those slain that day and I admire your efforts to make your sister’s name stand for so much more than the ugliness that took place that day.

Today I am writing because I have read that Susan Akins the cold heartless person (I use the term loosely) who murdered your beloved sister  and others and robbed the world of her beauty, talent and unborn child, is pleading to get out of jail because she is terminal.  She states she is a born again Christian, as a born again Christian how can she even begin to plead for herself.  Your sister’s pleas for her unborn child went not only un-headed but were mocked by Ms. Akins.  I am devastated to hear that the prison has approved this request and is awaiting the court’s ruling.

I know that they don’t consider her a threat anymore, but her prison sentence was not only to keep her off the streets and protect society, but it was a punishment, and she needs to serve the complete sentence.  She is lucky that all she got was a prison sentence.  She deserved less and your sister deserved so much more.

If there is anyway to convince the court system to not allow this to happen, I would like to lend my support.

My heart goes out to you and your family, as once again they are forced to suffer yet again at the hands of this women.

Who do I write/call to protest the possible "compassionate release" of Susan Atkins.  This is so incomprehensible and offensive!  I cannot begin to tell you how angry I am about this although nothing compared to your feelings, I am sure.

How can I help fight this release.  Susan Atkins showed no compassion to Sharon . . . she should not be permitted to die outside of the prison she created for herself.  Please let me  know how I can help or to whom I can write.  Thank you.

I am furious that this woman is gonna be set free! Please tell me how i can help. I just lost my brother & sister in law to a violent murder. If i can help in any way , please email me back.

Dear Tate Family Legacy,

In the summer of 1969, i was 13 years old.

I remember with clarity the Manson Family Situation.

I do not want to see Susan Denise Atkins released for any reason what so ever!

I am seeing alot of sympathy for Susan Denise Atkins, and she deserves none!

I am still upset about the murders after all these years! They were heinous and those manson people deserve no good treatment at all~

I hope you're on top of this Susan Atkins "compassionate release" thing. I'm sure you are. This woman should not get one ounce of compassion.  God Bless.

Dear Debra,

I saw on the news that Susan Atkins is asking for "compassionate" release since she is dying. If there is a place for me to sign a petition to keep this from happening please let me know or let the media know so that people like myself can sign it. God Bless You

Hello,

I am shocked by the recent news of Susan Atkins' application for compassionate release.  Is there anything the public can do to relay objection to this possibility?  It was reported earlier that she would be transferred to the prison medical facility in Chowchilla.  Has that changed?

Though I understand her need for medical treatment, certainly hospice care can be provided in the prison setting.   We're just stunned and shocked at the possibility of this woman being released.  My heart goes out to Ms. Tate, and I sincerely applaud her efforts to keep these people in prison.   This is so unnecessary.

Appreciate your time.  Thank you.

My name is ____ ___and I work for the _____ __ Police Dept.

I just read on cnn.com that Susan Atkins is asking for a ‘compassionate release’ because she only has a short time to live.

Can we write to Margarita Perez at the Board of Prison Terms to voice our concern regarding this so that she never gets out?

My deepest condolences to Sharon Tate's family.  I will be overnighting the following letter on Monday morning.  Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.  Together we can make a difference.

Parole Hearing: Compassionate Release Request

Dear Mr. Davis:

I feel very strongly that the compassionate release / parole of Susan Atkins should NOT be granted regardless of her state of health or regardless of her supposed rehabilitation.

I was in the 9th grade when I saw the horrible news about Sharon Tate's death and the senseless deaths of others caused by the Manson Family consuming the news worldwide.  Being a young teen I was horrified that there were such monsters in this world.  It was the first time this savage human element was presented to me in my world.  I have spent my entire life living outside of Dallas and I remember vividly when President John Kennedy was assassinated and it was extremely devastating to me as a child growing up in Texas.  However, to me it did not compare to the savage acts that Susan Atkins and the Manson animals committed on their prey—They delivered upon society a living nightmare that continues today.  I watched the entire Manson family saga unfold and I kept up with everything that was reported on the news, and as a young teenaged girl I read Vincent Bugliosi's book that detailed fully the horrendous crimes that were committed.  I was so relieved to learn that the death penalty was imposed on those who committed the horrible horrible crimes against innocent victims.   It was justice served and it was served justly and I had faith in our system—The murderers would die in prison—they earned it and they deserve it.

I was equally horrified when the death penalty was struck down in California and it was Manson and his clan that immediately came to my mind.  Susan Atkins should have been put to death years ago for her participation in such a terrible crime...the murder of a young and beautiful mother to be.   That was the punishment that was handed down and it should be carried out fully—Life in Prison means LIFE IN PRISON!

I can only imagine the devastation Sharon Tate’s loved ones have had to endure over the years just by their terrible loss in such a senseless inhumane manner, and I can imagine this devastation is compounded by knowing that someday Susan Atkins and those in her ‘family’ might possibly be set free.

I am now 54+ years, a mother of 3 and grandmother of 5, and I am compelled to tell you that my thoughts have not changed over the years.  Susan Atkins should spend the rest of her life in prison and I pray that you will not let your emotions override the decision that was made for Susan Atkins years ago.  The death penalty was given based on her own actions.  She was involved because she wanted to be involved—No one made Susan Atkins do something she was not willing to do herself.  She must be held accountable.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

So this chick is 60 years old. She has spent most of her life in jail and does not have that time worn, care worn look most 60 year old women have. No, she got 3 squares a day and didn't have to worry about holding a job, kids, college or any of that. No wonder she looks good. I'm younger than this chick, but the cares of the world show on my face. How old was Sharon Tate when she died? I think 26. I can't imagine anyone who could possibly feel sorry for her. For my part, if her death is very painful, she deserves that. If she has made peace with God, how nice for her. As far as here on earth goes, no matter what her condition, she doesn't deserve a nice vacation from jail because she's sick. Sharon Tate was a gorgeous, sweet, woman, who didn't deserve what she got - she didn't get any breaks!! Kay from NJ

To Whom This May Concern:

Just yesterday, I read that it is highly possible that Susan Atkins will leave prison on a "compassionate release" because she is terminally ill and would like to spend her final days with her family at her side.

This is completely abominable and utterly unacceptable.

Susan Atkins showed no "COMPASSION" for any of her victims, most notably Sharon Tate.  I find it extremely ironic and hypocritical that she is requesting a leave which carries this word in it.  As well, Ms. Atkins cold-bloodedly took part in causing these deaths and her victims didn't have the comfort of spending their last moments basking in the love of their family members.  Instead, their final moments were spent in sheer terror and horrendous pain, with poor Sharon even rumored to have died calling out to her mother.

As cruel, unfeeling and as unsympathetic as this may sound, Susan Atkins deserves to die in her jail cell, suffering without the benefits of any pain-numbing medication as well.

I am also extremely disappointed in Mr. Vincent Bugliosi who is quoted as saying that he has no objection to her being released "due to the circumstances".

She may no longer pose a threat to society, however, her actions can never be negated and no amount of time served will ever be enough.

The only circumstance that such a person should be released under is her own death when she should be released into the fires of hell.  I will pray that she not be released.

I was a young girl when these heinous crimes were committed. As a teenager, I was fascinated with the "Helter Skelter" story. As a middle-aged adult, I'm deeply horrified by it all. I don't wish any of the "Manson Family" members ill; I believe Karma is their great equalizer.

In Susan Atkins' case, from all I've read it would seem she has no remorse for or true comprehension of her crimes. It almost seems as if she believes she's spent enough time behind bars and we should release her for good behavior.

This seems to illuminate a blind-spot in her psyche. Of course she's born again! If she hadn't been, her rottenness would've eaten her up by now.

Incarceration for 39 years, brain cancer, and an amputated leg aren't payment enough for her crimes. Yet they seem Karmic in nature, would you agree? I am very sad for the families of all her victims. They weren't allowed to live to see 60.

Is there anything the public can do to prevent this compassionate parole from happening?  I have followed this since I was very young and have been so happy that none of these people have been able to get out of jail for the last 39 years - there is no room for compassion for any of these people.

Hello, my name is _____ _________.  I was five years told when your sister was killed.  I have been researching it since the latest news to come out about one of the woman that was involved in the brutal crime.  They may parole her since she is terminal.  I am against this.  I believe in forgiveness but I also believe that she does not deserve parole.

I was wondering if there are any petitions going around to stop the possible “compassionate release” of Susan Atkins.  If so, I’d certainly like to sign it.

What can i do?? To stop the release of Susan Atkins?? Is there a petition???

Hello,

I don't believe Debra is actually reading the emails but I am sure you are close to her. Do you know what Debra's thoughts are of on Susan Atkins being released from prison because she is terminally ill? Is she going to try to obtain a petition to stop her release? I have ambivelent feelings toward this. Since Susan is dying, I feel like being out of prison would not be anything to Susan, since she has brain cancer, which will probably confine her to her bed. However, I can't forget the grisley details on how Sharon and the others begged for their lives and were tortured before death. Poor Sharon didn't get any mercy from Susan, so why should Susan, even if she is changed. Sharon never got to see her baby and really didn't have much of a long life at 26. Also, Sharon had to watch everyone else be brutally killed before she was finally killed. I read how she was out of her mind before death due to watching all the horrific murders around her. In summary, please advise if Debra will have a petition to stop Susan's release for internet users. If she does, email me and I will sign. Sincerely, _____ _________

PS. I would have been a Sharon Tate fan anyway, even if she were still alive. She was simply beautiful and innocent. She could have been the 60's and 70's new version of Marilyn Monroe, if she lived. I love her performance in Valley of the Dolls.

That Susan Atkins monster must not be let out!  I don't care if she is dying.  There are many other killers that died from cancer in prison.  One being John Gotti.  Nobody let him out just because of that.  That woman does not deserve one minute or second of freedom.  I would like to say to her, I have no mercy for you bitch.
Debra, is there anything we can do about this?  I will travel from Alabama to California to dance on her grave.  I know I'm not supposed to hate, but I hate her and she deserves no mercy whatsoever.

Dear Debra Tate:

Although this is the very first letter I have written regarding the horrendous murder of your sister, Sharon Tate, I must write to you.  First of all, my sincere condolences are sent to you, your parents and all other family members and friends of Sharon Tate.

As a Christian, I am appalled that Susan Atkins would ask for mercy and release, while knowing that she gave Sharon Tate no mercy.  Without being judgmental, the Bible teaches that while God and Jesus are merciful, gracious and forgiving, Susan Atkins, herself is presumptuous in asking for mercy for herself when she gave no mercy to either Sharon Tate or her unborn child.

A friend of mine has a son imprisoned for murder.  He became a Christian while in prison and wrote to his mother that he is at peace in prision, because he accepts his sentence while knowing that he was wrong in the murder that he committed.

It is quite ironic that Susan Atkins would ask for mercy when she gave none, herself.  She should ask God for mercy and for peace of mind, and be willing to accept her sentence.  She was originally given a death sentence and the mercy she has already received is life in prison, rather than the original death sentence.

Susan Atkins has already been given a merciful sentence.  Where is her peace with God and genuine acceptance of her own wrong-doing?  Christians are not automatically expempt from wrong, just because we are Christians.  Susan Atkins does not appear to realize that she has already received mercy and is really pushing it to ask to be released from prison.

The Sharon Tate family and the families of all others killed by Susan Atkins and other members of the Manson family will never on this earth truly be free of the pain caused by these brutal, tortorous crimes and deaths.

The gall of Susan Atkins and her attorney husband only add to your pain.  As a Christian I must tell you that I do not agree with their plea for mercy.  Can she bring back the lives she took, ie. Sharon Tate and her unborn child?  Those actions cannot be reversed!!!

Will you please forward a copy of this letter to all involved in the possible release of Susan Atkins.  I am totally against the request of Susan Atkins and her attorney husband for mercy for Susan Atkins.  As a Christian, she should allow God to give her peace of mind, while still fulfilling her prison sentence.

Dear Debra,

I can't imagine the horror you and your family has had to endure at the hands of the monsters who took your sister's, and infant nephew's lives. My heart goes out to you and I pray that they will NEVER be released back into society, even after so many decades. I know they are going to be judged and sentenced at a much higher court when their time comes, however, that serves no real comfort to the families of their victims during their lifetimes. Please know that the thoughts, prayers and support of any normal, feeling, decent human being is with you whenever you have to endure one of those evil monster's parole hearings. I pray that no one EVER falls for their phony nonsense of being sorry and gives them another chance to poison anyone else's mind or destroy any more lives.
God bless you and yours.

I fully DO NOT think Susan Adkins deserves any "compassion release" due to illness.Where was her compassion when she was butchering all of those innocent people including an unborn child and where was her compassion during the trial when she laughed and giggled during the proceedings? You Reap What You Sow and there is a thing called Karma.Susan Adkins and the rest of them are right where they belong.also,I understand that all of the Manson Family members have been married while in prison and that either Tex Watson or Bobby Beusoli have fathered several children while incarcerated. I think that is totally outrageous! They are in prison and have lost the right to a normal life and family.Thank you for your time.

Dear Debra,

I woke up to hear that Susan Atkins might be released early.  I'm ashamed to say it but in earlier years I felt sorry for her.  The fact that she kept going up and being shot down.  I thought how could they keep getting someones hopes up so high.  Then I read about everything she had did.  I was born in 79 so I wasn't really up on manson followers, him of course I knew about.  Then what painted the evil picture of her to me.  Was reading the transcripts.  How dare she ask for compassion.  What compassion did she show Sharon a pregnant woman that she didn't even know.  Even admitting to killing someone she did know.  I feel like you I have compassion.  But where do we draw the line.  I'm sorry she has a brain tumor or whatever.  No victims of her rain of terror got the chance to have anything.  What about their compassion.  Their never coming back.  They don't get a do over.  So why should she?    She had chances to get away.  She made her bed so now she has to lie in it.  How do you give a convicted murderer compassion.  And one who has done it multiple times.  To me she still hasn't truly made up for her sins.  I say let God show her compassion.  Let him do with her what he sees fit.  We owe her nothing.  Please let me know if there is any way I can help.

How outrageous!!!  She wants "sympathy", "understanding". It's sickening.  Please God and those in charge on this Earth...let her rot and suffer in prison.  She doesn't deserve asperin, let alone strong pain medicines! I hope she suffers!!!

I've been a fan of Sharon's for many years and to think of this woman getting out of prison for any reason is disgusting.  I am a cancer survivor and didn' have any "cushy" time of it.  Good for me that I wasn't a serial killer but I still had a most miserable time time in the hospital.  I never asked for (or expecteded) any favors from anyone and certainly never got any.  I DID make up my mind to get my butt out of bed and walk those halls and get better...and now I'm still here to say Susan Atkins....GO TO HELL!!!  You surely will whether you get out of prison or not!

God Bless you Tate, LaBianca, Parent, Sebring, Folger, Frykoski, & Folger and all other victims families.....

I, too, would like to add my voice to the growing chorus of citizens who are protesting “compassionate release” for Susan Atkins.  Almost 40 years ago, a jury of Ms. Atkins peers listened to evidence and determined that she should be sentenced to death.   Ms. Atkins was afforded due process and her rights were respected and upheld.  It has taken almost 40 years, for that sentence to finally be carried out.

Ms. Atkins’ actions in those murders were horrific and she was remorseless.  I feel strongly that Ms. Atkins should NOT be released from prison despite the circumstances of her health.

Jail has actually been kind to Ms. Atkins.  She has been allowed to marry, take classes, draw, and become a Christian.  All those things she denied to her victims without even blinking an eye.  She participated in the murders of EIGHT human beings!  That is not insignificant!

Jail has been her home for 40 years.  That has been her family.  Jail is the place where she should stay.

Prison officials may free Manson family's Susan Atkins due to illness - Los Angeles Times  A friend and a fellow Sharon fan came across this news item. If there is a Petition to sign to stop her release please count me in. Thank you.

Hello.

I'm so very sorry for what you've had to suffer through, and what you're suffering through now.

I'm very willing to do whatever it takes to fight for the memory and rights of Sharon and the other victims.

Is there a petition in favor of keeping Susan Atkins (aka, Sadie) in jail for the rest of her life? I will sign it, pass it on, etc.

Hi,

I know some people who want to write letters to block Susan's release.

Is the address on Tatelegacy.com the right one?

being the same age as yourself I have followed for years the parole hearings of the Manson family members and say "bravo" to you for the courage you've shown in respect not only for your sister but for justice. I too have an older sister and I can't even imagine what you went through. Anyway,

I have never written or done anything except follow the news. I would now like to sign a petition for not releasing Susan Atkins. I consider myself a Christian, a kind person and an avid animal lover but it really bothers me that she could be released, whatever the reason. I'm almost sure she wouldn't be a danger to society if she is as sick as they say but why should she be shown compassion when she committed the worst crime a person can do, taking away the life of a mother and child? And for no reason! Is there any petition I can sign or letter I could write to help stop this? Thank you and God bless you.

I would really appreciate being kept appraised of what is going on with your work. I was always affected by the way she died. I was only 13 but it has haunted me my whole life. I know you have gone through hell and back and it stays with you. Anything I can do for you or your family let me know please. I get scared every time he comes up for parol. Susan Atkins sick or not should stay where she is.

Please let me know if and to whom I should send a protest letter regarding Atkins release plea.  If you need a signed letter airmailed to anyone just let me know via email.  Here is my basic protest.  Thank You!

Susan Atkins, the serial killer, was already shown extraordinary leniancy when she was given life after being given her more appropriate death sentence. Physically, she might not be a threat, but the message this request sends society is the real threat. A judicial disgrace and a huge slap in the face to victim's rights. And wouldn't this also set a dangerous precedent? I mean if they let this vicious multiple murderer out and disregard her sentencing then who else could they let out?

I have compassion for most people and living things. Treating others well is the positive difference we can make in this one life we have. This compassion does not, however, extend to serial killers.

I am sure prison is unpleasant. It should be. If it were tougher in prison less people would commit the crimes that send them there and therefore fewer innocent people would be murdered. Gee, I guess it's not really tough enough  since many inmates can sue people, write memoirs, join clubs, earn college credits, correspond with pen pals, use computers/internet, sire children, receive one on one therapy counseling , marry lawyers who enter pleas of release, etc...

Everyone in the world dies of something. Most people die with pain. Don't most terminal life sentence inmates die while IN prison? Makes sence. That is the point, right?

If Atkins truly understands what she has done/caused and is remorseful then why plea for release now? Atkins and the other Manson disciples are some the least deserving of compassion than any incarcerated inmates ever. I think they get special consideration and attention due to their stolen fame.  Please do NOT even consider any compassionate release plea for serial killer Susan Atkins.

Greetings:

Hi! Debra has really done a great job on this site and in her work to fight for the rights of her family and all victim's families. My absolute praise and gratitude to her. She is one amazing human being.

I was shocked this morning as I watched the tv screens at my gym that all flash with various morning new sources. I caught a glimpse of Diane Sawyer talking with Susan Atkins on GMA and immediately plugged in my headset and tuned into that program. I had no idea that Ms Atkins was terminally ill and attempting to seek release. I agree with the numerous others on the website that I am sickened by this thought. She should NOT be granted this request. After some Google searching on how I could stand up against this, I was brought to the Tate Family Legacy site.

As a citizen of California, I feel that it is my duty to speak up and let the proper people know how I feel.

Could you direct me to wherever/ whomever I need to speak to, or send emails to? I see a sample parole letter on your site, but I do not have the information (address, prisoner#, etc) or protocol on how to do this properly for this type of situation. I would really like to help out.

Best wishes to you always,

I would like to do something to block Atkins' release from prison.

Do you recommend sending a Parole Block Letter or is there another format to use?

Dear Debra,

I just heard about the proposed release of Susan Atkins on Friday of last week.  I spent a lot of time thinking about it over the weekend and the more I thought about it the more I thought it was a ridiculous idea.  I am in complete agreement with you that she deserves to be where she is and nothing will change that.  I understand that her family is suffering and that is horrible for them I am sure, but it is nothing compared with the suffering inflicted on your family and that of the other victims.  I don’t understand what makes her think she deserves early release, or compassion from anyone for that matter.  She showed no compassion for her victims and continues not to show any to this day.  I have a great admiration for your sisters accomplishments and the kind of women she quite obviously was.  She was beautiful and talented, but it seems she never let that go to her head.  She aimed to be a better person and make the world a better place and that is something we should all aspire to.  My thoughts are with you and the rest of your family as I oppose this release passionately.

Thank you.

Dear Ms. Tate,

Your patience and perseverance in representing the victims of these vicious murders is entirely admirable and very stoic.  I sincerely admire your dedication to keeping these killers in prison where they belong until their own natural deaths.

I cannot imagine the absolute horror and terror the murdered victims felt as their lives were ripped away so savagely, nor the anguish, pain, and suffering your family has endured all these years.

My family and I strongly oppose the compassionate release of Susan Atkins, under any circumstances.  That Ms. Atkins is suffering from cancer should have no bearing whatsoever on her obligation to fulfill the terms of her sentence of life in prison. The possibility of parole is not a guarantee that she be paroled.  Her sentence, first and foremost, is life in prison.  Nowhere in her sentence are the words "life in prison until diagnosed with a terminal illness."

Your comment to the media that you would pray for forgiveness upon the soul of Ms. Atkins at the moment of her death was magnificently poignant.  She must remain in prison until that moment

Dear Debra:  "Compassionate Release"? I ask did Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steve Parent, Rosemary LaBianca, Leno LaBianca have "compassionate release"? When Sharon Tate was begging for the life of her unborn child, Susan Adkins replied by saying "I don't care about you or your baby ####". Now she wants America to care about what happens to her? Why should she have the opportunity to go home and be with her loved ones, her victims never had that chance. The victims families only got to see the carnage of carved up bodies and words written with their own blood. May we always remember THE VICTIMS first. My heart and soul goes to you and may God give you the strength to carry on the torch for the ones who cannot speak.

Parole Hearing: Compassionate Release Request

Dear Mr. Davis:

I am a member of society who strongly opposes the release of Susan Atkins from prison.  Her disregard for human life and years of laughter at her crimes following the Hinman, Tate, & LaBianca murders hurt not only the families of the victims but society in general.  As her husband James Whitehouse said himself- if she were granted release she would still not likely ever be released from the hospital, so to grant it to her would basically just be a symbolic gesture that would serve no real purpose to anyone's benfit.  It would, however, anger the MANY people who oppose her release from prison like myself.  She was already spared from the death penalty and allowed to live out the remainder of her natural life.  She is not owed or entitled anything else in my opinion.  She is asking for the exact thing she denied her victims- mercy.  I pray you do the just and proper thing of denying her request.

Thank You For Your Time,

Dear Debra,

My name is _____ _______. I am writing to let you know that I will do anything and everything I can to be of assistance to you in assuring that Susan Atkins breathes her last breath behind the walls of the prison. I was only 12 years old when your sister was murdered. Her beauty was breathtaking and I still, to this day, think of her often. It sickens and infuriates me that the prison system would even consider such a request as a compassionate release for this monster. Kudos to you for being such a strong person and carrying on for your mother and Patti. God Bless you and stay strong. You have many soldiers in your corner. Sharon was and is the most beautiful woman inside and out that has ever come through Hollywood.

Dearest Tate Family,

I am appalled at the insulting request made by Susan Atkins Whitehouse for a "Mercy " release. Next year will be the 40th anniversary of these horrible murders and they are still fresh in many minds. The lives that were destroyed because of this senseless crime(s) can never be replaced. I wonder if Susan Atkins Whitehouse has ever really contemplated the horror she has committed. I wonder has she ever really thought about the tiniest victim of all, little Paul Richard Polanski who never got to feel his Mother's touch, or his Father's embrace. He never got to celebrate a birthday, learn to ride a bike, make home movies, which I'm sure his Father would have been doing every minute he could. He never got to eat ice cream, or have a dog. He never got to learn to read, or play in the ocean. He never got the chance to say his first word or learn to crawl or walk for the first time. He never got a first haircut. He never got the chance to try broccoli and say he didn't like it. He never got to go to kindergarten, first grade, 6th grade or have the excitement of graduating high school and going to college. He never got to see the sunrise or set.He never knew the love of a Grandmother. He never had Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Fireworks on the 4th of July! He never got to fall in love, get married or have a family of his own one day. He never got to live. His little life was taken from him before he could take his first breath.
Paul Richard Polanski and all that was taken from him is reason enough alone, to never release Susan Atkins Whitehouse or any other Manson Family murderer from prison ever no matter what their situation is. To release them would be the most insulting act imposed on the victims families and the memory of the victims. She is where she belongs, imprisoned for life. She took lives, so she needs to repay by  relinquishing her freedom since they have already spared her life.

Atkins was sentenced to "LIFE" in prison. That's does not mean life "outside" of prison, even if it's short lived. Why show compassion to a serial murder? The victims were certainly given none. Sharon begged and pleaded!   I have been in law enforcement for 15 years and this is one of the most obscene requests I've seen!  What must the victims families think of this?   Compassion must be shown to the victim's familes and not to the murder!

hello, I do appreciate the opportunity to express my deepest concern for all the TATE FAMILY. I was born on the exact month and day as Sharon Tate, only 13 yrs. younger. I HAVE LITERALLY been consumed in my thoughts of how unfair her situation was.I was 13yrs old at the time, and it scared me to no end for years.I lived in tenn. and just knowing about what happened to her changed my life for good.I cant image going thru such a situation, and I feel so much for what Doris felt at the time not to mention her husband , and sisters. I'm so happy to have learned that patti[I have a twin sister named patty, as well as a sister-n-law named sharon] kept up the legal matters in this case and to know that debra is doing so as well. I was interested in knowing how Sharon's farther is doing now and how he faired during all this tragedy. The only thing that helped me to not keep shaking in my boots over her tragedy, is knowing that the creator himself will remember Sharon and the Bible says at Isaiah 65;17 that God, Jehovah will '' create a new earth and the former things will not be called to mind, neither will  they come up into the heart''.I live for the day when no such things will will happen at all to anyone and Sharon Tate will have a future again on earth with no fears before her.I was thinking of her again and thought to myself, wonder if their is any info about her. I was so happy to be able to read about her and to know what help you might need. Thank you so much for letting others see and read about her.  I would like to do anything to help as well.

(Webmaster's note: Thank you for the letter. To answer your questions about Patti and Paul Tate, unfortunately they have both passed on, as has Doris. )

Dear Debra-I am so angry to learn that Susan Atkins may be free to "die with loved ones", especially considering that she did not allow her victims to do the same.  This is outrageous!  I can only hope that the State of California comes to its senses and realizes that this woman deserves to rot in jail for the pain she has caused your family and other families.  I hope and pray that she will finally have to answer to her responsibility in this when she dies and I truly hope that she must look into the faces of your sister and nephew and all of her other victims when she does.  My heart is with you and your family as it is with any survivors who have to continuously be reminded of the murders of their loved ones with ridiculousness such as this!  Please take care.

Dear Debra,
I am just sickened by the thought that this monster Susan Atkins could be released because she is going to die in six months.  I am more sickened that the State of California would even consider ever releasing her for any reason.  I just want to do my part in helping her stay and die behind bars, that is just what she deserves.  For that matter she should have died long ago with the  rest of the Manson family when they were all sentenced to death.  I don't know what world California is in, but they need a reality check.  How dare Susan Atkins asking to be released.  i am writing to Mr. Davis to express my disgust with the entire situation.    God Bless you and and all that you do to keep these  cold blooded killers locked up and away from society.

Dear Debra and the Tate family,my name is ___ from Glassport,PA.I am 33 years old,and at the time when those sick people attacked your sister,i had not been born yet.I had to write and in case you may not know,Susan Atkins is asking for compassionate release because she has terminal brain cancer.I really hope they would not leave her out. From the article i read,i was crying and horrified at what she did.I do not know how your family dealt with it.She thinks people should feel sorry for her because she has terminal brain cancer....poor baby,at least she is alive,at least she has a warning that her days are numbered. That was stomach-wrenching reading that. Then she said she was stoned on acid at the time,so someone made her take acid?? Then made her do something so disgustingly horrible to someone that was so pretty and innocent? That bothers me very bad,and i hope they make her stay in jail for the rest of her time, because she deserves it.She`s lucky she`s alive now,to have lived as long as she has,and meanwhile your beautiful sister was innocently ...well u know,i dont want to remind u of it.The main point of my email is to ask u to please fight against susan atkins getting out of jail. She`s upset because she`s dying from a disease and she`s in prison. She doesnt deserve to even be alive right now,and she wants sympathy for being locked up.They were very lenient on her (too lenient!!).Please fight against her being left out.You can email me if there is any way i can help.Thank u for reading my email.God bless you

When I first saw that Susan was dying from brain cancer, for an few minutes I felt compassion.  Then, as I read more and remembered so vividly reading of Sharon’s horrible death, my compassion left. For more years than I care to count, I thought I was against the death penalty; but, deep down, no doubt, I support the death penalty. Dying or not, the woman should never step outside the prison walls until she dies. I’m so sorry for your loss and what you have had to deal with all these years, but I’m so glad to see you still standing up for what’s right. Hang in there and, hopefully, she will not walk out of prison but, rather, some day will be carried out to her last resting place. GOOD LUCK!

Dear Ms Tate:

I was appalled upon hearing that Susan Atkins was requesting early release due to her terminal illness.  She should have been put to death 36 years ago along with her "family members" who committed these horrible crimes.  I was born in August of 1969 but I have followed this case over the years and its impact is still devastating after all these years.  The fact that people can just enter someone's home and slaughter innocent people is mind boggling.  My prayers are with you and admire your family's strength over the years and the positive attitude you have upheld.  I am sure the pain is still as much as it was almost 39 years ago.  Susan should never be released under any circumstances and should certainly not receive "mercy" when she told your sister to her face she had no mercy for her.  It is her destiny to die in prison as she  chose the path which lead her there.  The victims of the killings were not given a second chance and your poor nephew never even got the chance to live.  Please forward this letter to the proper person who will be handling this matter.

Hi,

Just a note to let you know I typed up a letter to James Davis at the Board of Prison Terms today to oppose the release of Ms. Atkins…you have my support all the way…
